If you’re on Instagram, you’ve probably noticed the vast array of beautiful, artistic Highlight Covers on profiles throughout the platform.
If you’ve ever wondered how to create them and give your Instagram profile a boost, this post is for you. ♥
In just a few quick and easy steps you, too, can have an Instagram Profile that showcases your personality and passions with fun and flare. Minimalist or colourful, elegant or retro, Canva has easy-to-edit Highlight Cover templates to fuel your creative side.
In this short tutorial, I’ll go through the few steps of Creating Instagram Highlight Covers in Canva.
Using beautifully designed Highlight Covers instantly make our profile look professional. We can arrange and orderly showcase topics we focus on so viewers know what content we’re sharing. I use four Highlight Covers ~ 1) Poetry, 2) Design, 3) Blogging and 4) Tutorials. Highlighting these topics give viewers an instant snapshot of the content I typically focus on and share. When I share an Instagram Story that I’d like to keep in my profile, I’ll add it to its relevant Highlight Cover.
There is no limit to the number of Highlight Covers we can add and use.
We can easily create Highlight Covers with a free Canva account, or trial Canva Pro 30 days for free!
Canva has hundreds of free designs that can be easily edited and customized for your liking. When you’re logged in to your Canva account type “Instagram Story Highlight Covers” in the search bar and you’ll see all the design templates available. Or you can easily view templates here.

So many templates to choose from!
Once you choose your template(s), you can easily edit and customize them to your liking.
For this tutorial, I’m using the Purple and Blue Outline Doodles Highlight Cover templates.
To get started, you can Apply all Pages or select individually by clicking on the design on the left or on the presentation images located below the template.
In the image below, I selected the thumbs-up design from the left side (you can see the + sign over the design) and it added it as the first design in the presentation images.
We can edit the designs in multiple ways.
To change the circle element colour I just clicked on the circle element, then I clicked on the purple box located on the top left next to the Animate option.
This opened my colour options. With Canva Pro I used my colour palette.
Or you can add a new colour!
Repeat steps to change the background colour.
To change the colour of icons/elements, we just have to select the element and repeat the steps above.
To view and use other elements, just click on Elements Icon located on the left panel. We can view and use the search option to narrow our search.
I’ve edited all designs and now I just need to download them.
To do this, I just clicked on the Download arrow, then chose File Type and Select pages. I chose PNG and downloaded all 13 Highlight Covers.
When I’m working on Instagram designs, I first download them to my computer and then send them to my phone to upload to Instagram. You can easily skip this step by using the Canva App for phone.
And you’re done! ♥
