How to Add Background Colour to Text in Canva!
Watch via YouTube
Canva is my go-to design tool for social media graphics. With its easy-to-use templates, we can easily design graphics for social media, marketing material, and so much more. And the features are amazing!
If you have a Canva account, you’re good to go. If you’re new to Canva, you can easily create a free account here, or use the link below.
You don’t need the Pro version to access this feature!
In this short tutorial, we’ll go through the few steps of adding a background colour to text in Canva. ♥
Okay, let’s jump in.
First, select the text you’d like to add a background colour to.
Then click on Effects, located above your design.
This will open the Effects panel on the left.
Under Style, you’ll see the option Background.
Once you click on it, you’ll see the yellow colour added to your text.
We can change the Roundness, Spread, Transparency, and Colour.
To change the Colour, just click on the yellow Colour box.
Then choose your colour or add a custom colour from your palette, as displayed below.
I reduced the Transparency, as well.
And we’re done! You can download your design in your desired format.
If you haven’t been using this feature in Canva, I hope this post encourages you to do so. It’s a fantastic tool to easily add a background colour to text in our designs.

I did it once and could never found where to do it again. Thanks a lot Natalie, it surely takes steps for you to mix print-screens and precise text explanations, but it is needed for cases like this!
