Have you ever wondered how to customize the visual appearance of elements and animations in a video?
In this post, we’ll go through the steps of customizing the timeline in which elements are displayed (and their animation) in a video designed in Canva.
Customizing the Timing of Animation ~ MP4 File
NOTE: The Show Timing feature is currently available on video templates only.
If you have a Canva account, you’re good to go. If you’re new to Canva, you can easily create a free account here, or use the link below.

In the image below, I created my video design with numerous images, elements, and text.
For this tutorial, I’ll add an additional two elements with animation to my graphic and customize the timing of their appearance in the video.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If your video design is in fullscreen like below, click on the Show Pages arrow, located at the bottom of your screen. You’ll need this to access the timeline.
This will display the pages in the order you’d like for your video. It’s essential to have this open or you won’t be able to see the timeline.
TIP: You can add, duplicate, and delete pages by clicking on the purple dots that appear when you hover over the slide. You can drag and drop your slides in the order you’d like.
You can add Transitions here, as well.
Okay, back to elements and the timeline.
I added an arrow and a thumbs-up emoji. These are the two elements that I’ll animate and customize the timing of their appearance in my video.
NOTE: You don’t need to add an animation effect to the elements, but it does add a seamless display in the video. It’s super easy to do, too!
Adding Animation to Elements in Canva
To add animation to elements, just select your element, then click on Animate, as displayed below.
You’ll see the Animations available for both Page Animation and Element Animation.
For this tutorial, we’re using Element Animations.
I chose the Wipe Animation effect and set it for Both (Enter and Exit), I adjusted the speed and chose a down direction.
TIP: If you select any text, you’ll see Text Animations!
You’ll notice that when I select the element again, the Wipe Animation effect is displayed.
Next, I selected the thumbs-up animated emoji, edited the colours, and then added the Pop Animation effect, following the steps above.
Customize the Timing of Animation in a Video in Canva
Let’s customize when they appear in the video.
First, select your element. You’ll see the three dots, and the word More will appear on hover.
Click on it to see more options.
TIP: You can also right-click on the element to open the options.
Click on Show Timing.
You’ll see a purple box appear above the page in your video timeline.
To adjust the timing, click and drag either side of the box to adjust where you’d like it to appear.
I want the arrow to appear briefly after the start.
I repeated these steps for the thumbs-up emoji.
I want it to appear separate from the arrow and close to the end of the video.
You can view/play your video and make any edits.
TIP: You can also adjust the timing of pages/slides by clicking and dragging the sides of the slide. As an example, I just increased the timing on my slide from 5 seconds to 8.7 seconds. You can see the adjustment in the image below.
When you’re done, you can download your video as an MP4 or GIF file.
Click on Share > Download > then select your file type.
That’s it. You’re done!
