Sometimes it takes the absence of something to make us aware of its presence.
I have always loved those rare moments when the world seems completely still. There is a particular kind of peace in it. But stay with that stillness long enough, and something else begins to reveal itself. We begin to notice what is no longer happening. The world seems to have lost one of its movements.
I think there are so many things in this life we experience without ever really noticing what makes the experience possible. We become accustomed to movement, sound, scent, and touch. They belong so naturally to the background of our days that we rarely stop to consider their source.
Until something becomes still.

Reflections ~ Presence
Perhaps this is one of the quiet gifts of stillness. It allows absence to become a kind of presence.
This poem emerged from that stillness. ♥
The Wind: What Stillness Reveals
I have known days held completely still,
leaves holding their silence, wildflowers without sway,
a cloudless blue with nothing to reveal the invisible currents moving through it.
I love that stillness.
Yet in that pause, what was missing
made itself known.
What we call the wind.
Four letters for something so vast,
yet known so intimately by the living world.
A leaf knows the wind in movement,
then joins its kin, each rustle a note
born of the wind.
And we hear the symphony.
Two daisies, anchored to the same earth, reaching into the same sky,
know each other’s touch only in the wind’s sway.
We witness their dance.
Across a golden field, the invisible takes form,
travelling in waves through a thousand stems.
We read the rhythm of the wind.
Roses and lavender release their fragrance into summer’s breeze,
their sweet scent reaching us
before the flowers come into view.
Everything knows the wind.
A seed knows the wind as passage,
its future carried through open sky.
A bird knows it beneath an open wing,
lifted into flight by the unseen.
Above, clouds travel within its currents,
carrying the promise of rain
toward distant lands.
The wind passes,
and the world remembers.
Generations before us
caught moving air in cloth
and trusted it across oceans,
toward horizons yet unknown.
It shapes the desert grain by grain,
and with patience and time,
leaves its memory in mountains.
And there are days it gathers into fury,
turning sky upon earth,
leaving whole landscapes altered by its passing.
Yet that same force can arrive
on a summer afternoon
as a caress of coolness against my skin.
So on those perfectly still days,
when leaves fall silent and the blue gives no sign of movement,
I marvel at what the stillness reveals:
how this invisible presence we call wind
brings the living world alive
in movement, sound, scent, and touch,
and how much of that world
could only ever be known
through its passing.

It was only in the stillness that I began to understand how much the wind had been giving me all along.
In its absence, I became aware of how much of the living world it brings into our experience through movement, sound, scent, and touch. These things had become so familiar that I had never really stopped to consider what made them possible.
Nothing had changed except my awareness.
The wind itself remains invisible, but perhaps that is part of its wonder. We do not need to see something directly to know its presence. Sometimes we know it through what moves. Sometimes through what becomes still.
Perhaps the invitation is simply to stay long enough to notice the difference.
Because once we do, an ordinary breeze may never feel entirely ordinary again.

A Note on These Reflections
For those who have been following along, you may recognize this format from my One Word series. These reflections have now found their home within Tapestry of Voices: When Nature Speaks, becoming part of its exploration of wonder, belonging, and our relationship with the living world.
If you’re new here, you’re most welcome to explore the reflections that came before, each offering its own invitation to notice, wonder, and see the familiar anew.
