When Nature Speaks: The Dandelion’s Testament

Poetry· Reflections· Tapestry of Voices: When Nature Speaks

22 Sep

Tapestry of Voices: When Nature Speaks began with a question.

What if nature could speak?

What might a dandelion tell of its own existence? What might a leaf say of release, a river of all it has carried, a feather of flight?

I found myself longing to read poems that lived within that wondering. Poems that did more than observe nature, but imagined its perspective with curiosity and reverence. Poems that might bring me closer to another way of being and leave me marvelling at how extraordinary it is that any of this exists at all.

There is something both intimate and humbling in becoming curious about another existence. To look closely is to recognize how much there is to discover, and how much will always remain beyond what we can know. Perhaps that is part of what draws me so deeply to nature: the invitation to come closer without needing to possess the mystery, to wonder about another life while allowing it to remain entirely its own.

I began to imagine the book I wanted to keep close.

A book resting on my coffee table, within reach. Something I could return to in moments when I wanted to be immersed in wonder and curiosity, to open anywhere and linger for a while with a world I thought I knew.

These were the poems I wanted to read.

And so, I began writing them.

But somewhere in the writing, something else began to unfold.

There are moments now when the world feels almost unbearably alive to me.

Not because it has changed, but because I finally stopped moving past it.

A snowflake melting into my coffee. A bird’s nest holding the memory of care. A single leaf releasing itself to earth. The vastness held within a drop of water resting on a blade of grass. The smallest things can open into something far greater when we linger long enough to truly see them.

As I became more attentive to the living world, I found myself wanting to write about the moments that stayed with me, and the questions, emotions, and deeper awareness they stirred. Moments of reverence and tenderness, of mystery and awe, when something quietly witnessed seemed to open into a greater understanding of belonging, transformation, or what it means to be alive.

The more closely I looked, the less separate any of it seemed. There is no clear edge between what we are and what surrounds us. We belong to the same waters, the same earth, the same continual becoming.

And so, my reflections began finding their place alongside the voices.

I have already begun sharing some of these reflections here on my blog. Until recently, I had thought of them as pieces that lived alongside the book. But as Tapestry of Voices has continued to take shape, I have come to understand that they belong within it.

They are the human voice listening in return.

And perhaps this is where the tapestry has revealed itself most fully to me.

The imagined voices of the living world. My own reflections arising from encounters with it. Different threads, woven through the same wonder, curiosity and reverence, and a growing awareness that nothing exists separately.

The book I first imagined has become something more than I knew it would be.

A place to linger with the living world and all that remains mysterious within it. To wonder about lives unfolding alongside our own. To see more deeply what has become familiar. And to remember that we, too, belong to this vast and breathing tapestry of life.

The dandelion was one of the first voices from the collection.

It seems fitting that this is where we begin.

With something so familiar that we have learned to call it a weed.

This is an invitation to look again.

♥

The Dandelion’s Testament

They call me weed,
as if resilience were an offence,
a name given to what grows
where it was never invited.
Still, I answer in gold.

I was not born in gardens.
No careful hand planted me,
no fence guarded my sleep.
I woke between stones,
where the smallest fracture
still held enough earth for me.

I know the language of light,
opening my gold to morning.
As the world speaks in warmth and weather,
I have learned how to listen.

Even drought cannot silence me;
I store water deep,
trusting in the return of rain.

Hope does not ask for rich earth;
it blooms wherever light
and longing meet.

You may see one flower.
I am already a multitude,
a hundred small suns gathered into gold,
alchemy in miniature,
holding nectar and pollen,
drawing the visiting bee.

But my gold is only part of what I carry.
My leaves taste of earth and bitterness,
but within that bite lies medicine.
Children choose my gold for crowns,
and when my gold gives way to white,
they blow their wishes
into the waiting wind.

And I let go.
Each seed is a prayer released,
a small globe of breath,
a dream with wings.

I do not cling;
I scatter faith into the wind,
knowing not all will land,
but some will bloom again.
I have travelled continents this way,
on the lips of storms,
across oceans of air.
No passport, no permission.
Only persistence,
and the will to begin anew
wherever I am carried.

So if you see me rising from a crack in the sidewalk,
know this:

I am the humble brightness
that outlasts neglect,
the breath that becomes a thousand suns.
I am life insisting on itself,
tender in its reach,
wild in its will to remain.

Perhaps this is where listening begins.

In pausing long enough to wonder about the lives unfolding around us, we begin to see beyond what has become familiar. The dandelion remains what it has always been, yet our encounter with it can change. What we once passed without thought may become something we stop to marvel at.

This is the first nature voice I am sharing from Tapestry of Voices: When Nature Speaks. As the collection continues to unfold, I’ll be sharing more of these imagined voices, along with the Reflections that have become another thread within the tapestry.

If you would like to follow along, you can visit When Nature Speaks, where I’ll be gathering the voices and reflections from the collection as it grows.

Arrive with curiosity. Linger for a while. Let the familiar open into wonder. ♥

This space is an offering of presence.
Words shaped through listening, reflection, and reverence.
A place where becoming is honoured, and the voice remains true.
